On Saturday, 11th July 2026, the streets of Manyangwa Nakwero came alive with more than the sound of motorcycle / vehicle engines. They echoed with a powerful message of hope, responsibility, and community as the Rotary Club of Manyangwa Nakwero, under the leadership of President Rtn. Alice Drazuru, organized a Road Safety Awareness Campaign under the theme “Safe Roads Save Lives.”

The day began with a symbolic brass band walk from Manyangwa Trading Centre to Victors valley hotel, bringing together Rotarians, 40 boda boda riders, community leaders, school representatives including students and teachers, and officers from the Uganda Police Force’s Traffic Department in Kasangati Division. It was more than a procession—it was a shared commitment to making every journey safer.

What made the campaign truly memorable was not only the walk but also the conversations that followed. During an interactive sensitization session, the boda boda riders spoke candidly about the realities they face every day: pressure to rush passengers, speeding to earn a living, poor road visibility, and the constant risk of accidents. In return, Rotarians listened with empathy while sharing the heart-breaking stories of lives lost on Uganda’s roads—fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, breadwinners, and friends whose absence continues to leave families and communities devastated.

The Inspector of Police Kabigumira Sam educated participants on the common causes of road traffic crashes, emphasizing the importance of obeying traffic regulations, wearing protective gear, respecting speed limits, and remaining visible on the road. The inspector of police reminded everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility involving riders, motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, schools, local leaders, and every member of the community.

Recognizing that awareness must be accompanied by practical action, the Rotary Club of Manyangwa Nakwero donated 40 branded helmets and 40 reflector jackets to the registered boda boda riders who participated in the campaign. The safety gear will help improve visibility during early morning, evening, and adverse weather conditions while providing critical protection in the event of an accident.

Addressing the gathering, President Rtn. Alice Drazuru reminded participants that road safety extends far beyond traffic enforcement.

“These riders are fathers, entrepreneurs, neighbours, and providers. When we protect a rider, we protect a family. Road safety is not just a transport issue—it is a community responsibility.”

The gesture was warmly received by the riders, who pledged to wear their helmets consistently, use reflector jackets whenever they are on the road, obey traffic regulations, and become ambassadors for road safety within the Manyangwa Nakwero community.

The campaign concluded with renewed hope and a shared commitment among Rotarians, police officers, local leaders, and community members to continue working together in reducing road traffic accidents. More than helmets were distributed that day; trust was built, lives were valued, and partnerships were strengthened.

The Rotary Club of Manyangwa Nakwero once again demonstrated what it means to be People of Action. By walking alongside the community, listening before acting, and investing in practical solutions, the club transformed a simple awareness campaign into a lasting promise that every life on the road matters.

Because when a rider gets home safely, a family sleeps peacefully. And when communities unite for road safety, everyone moves closer to a future where Safe Roads Save Lives.
